One Plus One = One [Part Two - The Great Lie]

Part Two - The Great Lie

So there is the hole, this disconnection, this separation between God and me.But it feels like it goes so much farther than my own personal discussion to chose something less. It feels like there is something else there that makes God distant.I struggled with this for awhile and was unable to put my finger on it until recently.

You see there has been a lie that has been floating through the church for centuries. This one I’m going to blame on the Greeks, Gnostics and the ancient/modern day. Let me explain.

It all started with the Greeks and the Gnostics. They started this concept that there is a physical world and a spiritual world. This is true. But they went a little farther and said that the spiritual world is good and the physical world is bad. This is actually one of the first heresies to sneak into the church. You had the Gnostics saying that if Jesus was perfect then he was just this spirit that floated around and he didn’t really have a physical body.

So there was this rift…this disconnection that entered into the subconscious of Christianity that anything physical is bad and anything spiritual is good.Anything physical…anything dealing with earth is evil; therefore God dwells in heaven disconnected from humanity and the world. God is separated from us because we are physical being and therefore evil.

So we are taught that there are these special Christian formulas that we must follow in order to connect with God. The only place we are able to connect with Him is through reading our Bible, praying, and going to church because He would never reside at any other place. We have to have two or more people gathered in His Name in order for Him to show up. We have to close our eyes and bow our heads when we pray so we aren’t distracted by the evils of this world. There are countless others, but you get the point.

Now I know that I’m making a wide scoping generalization here about the church and Christianity here, but that’s the point. The wide scoping point that we are putting across as the church and Christianity is that God is completely disconnected from people and only interacts with us when we find the special formula that allows us to connect with Him. And I think this is one of the greatest lies perpetuated by the church today.
